"...beautiful book about (Dr. Parthasarathi's) journey with lupus. So much wisdom--a must-read for patients and rheumatologists alike."
- J. Yazdany, Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of Lupus Clinic, UCSF Medical Center
In Lupus: In the Jaws of the Wolf, Niranjana Parthasarathi, M.D. recounts her thirty-seven-year history with this debilitating disease. Her symptoms began at age 23 while a medical student, and though she was able to pursue her passion for her career, a severe flare at age 50 disabled her, followed by an extended period of multi-organ complications of both disease and treatment.
In this book the many complexities and frustrations that lupus brings to a person’s life are explored, including physical limitations and effects on relationships as well as one’s identity.
Dr. Parthasarathi candidly shares her mistakes, pitfalls, and lessons learned along her challenging, continuing journey offering hope, insight, and recommendations to help alleviate suffering:
Dr. Partha, as she's fondly known by her patients, graduated from Georgetown University, Medical College of Virginia, and completed residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital. She then served as a professor of internal medicine for twenty years at the University of Cincinnati, where fellow physicians named her one of the "Best Doctors in America" each of her final eight years in clinical practice.
As a physician with lupus, she brings expertise, and a unique perspective that has enabled her to thrive despite the ravages of the disease. She hopes her account will aid other chronically ill patients and ease their paths forward.
